Bow Practice - Broadheads

Broadheads! Got three arrows and three broadheads on them.

I mean, I need three broadheads and I only have three arrows left, so I literally am using every good arrow I have for my killing arrows.

I have about 6 arrows that are being re-fletched, and I purchased another 6 that are going in my quiver, but I don’t have enough time to prove them before next Monday’s hunt. I am three full days away from my first sit of the season, so I just need to suck it up and work with what I have!

Today’s practice

I ended up shooting my three arrows through a bag about five times each. Once again, I was consistently missing 3-4 inches left at 20 yards. I adjusted my sight after the third, fourth, and fifth rounds, but those arrows weren’t coming back.

I took the bow inside and immediately noticed the problem - my sight wasn’t adjusting. I would turn the horizontal wheel that should have helped me missing left, but the sight wouldn’t budge. I don’t know if it has gotten dirty, rusty, or what, but that function just isn’t working.

I managed to move the sight over a couple millimeters that hopefully will give me the correction I need. Unfortunately it was too dark by the time I was able to figure this out so I couldn’t confirm that my fix resolved the issue.

This makes me nervous about transporting my bow. It seems that the sight is pretty easily being knocked out of alignment so bringing my bow back and forth from the tree stand is a little scary to me. I’m just going to have to send a few arrows up at the hunting grounds before I go in for a sit and be extra careful that it doesn’t get bumped.

These setbacks unfortunately have me thinking I won’t realistically be able to shoot anything alive over ~40 yards. My shots are so inconsistent at 20 I don’t think I’ll be able to dial into 50 like I was hoping at the beginning of my preparation. It is really unfortunate, but seems to be the responsible thing to do.

I also am set on ditching this sight after the hunt. I think it will work for the purpose of this hunt next week but afterwards it needs to go in the trash and I am moving onto a new multi-pin sight. I think I know some adjustments to my setup I would like to make which hopefully will set me up pretty for 2021.

Visiting the hunting property

I’m still feeling good about next week! We were able to take a trip to setup some trail cams and I got to shoot out of the blind. On our way into the meadow where the blind is we saw all of the (beef) cows that were still on the property (they were moved off today) as well as a few (elk) cows and a small bull! We were shocked to see elk in the meadow with the cows. Usually they wait for all those cows to move out before heading down, but this had us excited!

As we drove around and started working on the blind/cameras, that bull (which had run into the woods a few hundred yards) started bugling at us. You could tell it was not happy that we had come in and ruined their dinner! I have only head a bull bugle a few times in my life, so to hear this so close was awesome.

It was a young five by five bull, but I’ll take it! My archery experience is so limited that if I get an elk down it’ll be an awesome hunt. Bonus points for sure if it has antlers, but I would simply love an opportunity to watch some wildlife and have a chance at taking an elk.

I’m getting excited! Can’t wait to get out there.
