Bow Practice - Missed bags and broken arrows

Written by E. Chase Bleyl on 24 August 2020.

What a couple weeks! I was killing it and now I’m not killing anything.

Let me recap.

We went to Salt Lake City from August 19 through August 21. When we left on Wednesday, I was hitting a basketball sized group from 70 yards. On top of that I was doing full-draw hold exercises where I was able to hold for 45+ seconds a time.

We went away for a few days for my wife’s work and to visit family.

Come back, and on Sunday, I break three arrows as my sight had been bumped and was having me miss far left.

What happened?

For starters, I didn’t shoot an arrow or two from 20-30 yards to confirm my sight was still dialed in before going right back to 70 yards. The 2-3 inches I was missing from 30 ended up being close to a foot from 70, which had me missing the bag entirely.

This has absolutely rattled my confidence and has me stressed out with the hunt less than a week away. I was building some great strength in my arms and shoulders and now I can’t hardly hold a pin at 30 yards.

I’m going to keep plucking arrows and see if we can’t get back on track. I might not make it back to 70 yards (or my original goal of 80) but I’m hoping to get back to 50 or 60 before the hunt on Monday.

What a mess.
