Bow Practice - Back to 60
I am back to 60 yards! Surprisingly I shot a pretty good group as well. I’m shooting at a bag with probably a 12”-16” diameter circle. I am consistently getting 3/5 arrows in a fist sized group, with the other two probably an additional 3-5” away. In other words, I’m about 60% confident I can kill an elk today from 60 yards.
That’s obviously not where I want to be, but compared to where I was a week ago I’ve made some great progress.
At the moment I’m still just pounding arrows. I’ll focus on my balance, tilt, hold, trigger squeeze, and a couple other random things occassionally, but my number one priority at the moment is get as many arrows through my bow and into the bag as possible.
At the end of my session I did a little exercise where I shot at three targets from a seated position; 30 yards, 40 yards, and 50 yards. I will almost definitely be shooting out of a blind, so this position will be critical for me. I’d only send one or two arrows at a target per rep, but I did alright. It was good to get a gauge of my confidence from different distances.
My goal is to be hitting 60% groups (like I mentioned above from 60) from 80 yards. If I am shooting from the blind, the elk will be anywhere from 15 to 45 yards, which means 80 will be almost double that. In case we get to a spot and stalk, I’ll be extremely confident up to 60 yards (possibly 70), giving us a legit chance at putting an arrow in a bull if we find one.
Gonna keep chugging along! Based on my quality and quantity of practice, I might update in two or three days. Hopefully we will be at 80+ yards at the next update!
