Bow Practice - Draw

Written by E. Chase Bleyl on 24 May 2020.

Much better practice today. Did some research on my sight issues and ran to Cabela’s to fix the bag issues!

Sight Research

Watched a few YouTube videos and read a few articles - peep rotation is common with new strings as the flex of the string is breaking in. The nicer string you buy, the faster the string will break in and the peep stops rotating.

I recently replaced my bow string (March) and opted for a cheaper (not the cheapest) string. The articles I read said that it could take 100 shots on the string to finally wear it out to the point where the peep stops rotating.

Because the peep sight is moving so much on the new string it is best to manually rotate the D-loop so that it aligns with the peep sight when drawn. The D-loop will likely need to be rotated every few draws but will be an easy fix during target practice and prevent any time-consuming fixes that will need to be redone in the future.

Bag replacement

I ran to Cabela’s late yesterday evening and bought a new bag! I got a Yellow Jacket YJ-425 as it had great reviews from Amazon & Cabela’s and seemed to be a slightly lighter model than the other Yellow Jacket that Cabela’s had in-stock. I have to lug this bag about 50 yards everytime I shoot back into the woods so portability is pretty important for me.

I also bought a tool to help with arrow removal, and it seems to be working fine. I really could have used that with my last bag, although it still wouldn’t be a hard pull.

Practice

I shot 5 volleys of 4 arrows at 20 yards. We cleared some brush at around 28 yards so I can start lengthening my range; right now, 20 yards feels like a mile.

My first two sets I was focused on my posture. I had some suspiscions based on some prior research that my setup could possilby not fit my frame quite right. I need to do an examination on that but did notice an interesting fault right off the bat.

Here was my first volley.

First set of arrows

You can see that we were all over the place. My thoughts on this set were get the arrows in the bag, close to the marks, and look at my posture to notice any glaring faults.

Posture during first volley

I immediately saw my trail elbow sticking up off my notch instead of back. I wasn’t sure if this was due to my draw length or just a bad habit, so I decided to experiment with it a bit on my next set.

Second set of arrows

The next volley was still pretty erratic but I was focused on dropping my elbow down to come straight back from the notch.

Posture during second volley

After feeling better about my setup I began to settle in a bit and start to see a little more consistency.

Third set of arrows

Fourth set of arrows

Fifth set of arrows

Accuracy wasn’t great, especially from such a short distance, but I’ll give myself a few more sessions before I get too worked up over that. Consistency was pretty good towards the end of the session.

Biggest thing now is confirming my setup. I’ll be doing some drills this next week to ensure I am at the correct draw length and adjust it if necessary.
