New year, new driver, new round
Big news! Haven’t updated in a while but we are starting out the new year 2021 with a bang!
New Driver!
I got a new driver for Christmas! I splurged on a Cobra King Speedzone driver. Originally I was looking to buy a second-hand Cobra F9 driver, but their resale on eBay was around $250-$300! By comparison, I bought my Speedzone brand new (with custom shaft, color, and grip) for $350.
Why the Cobra Speedzone? Mostly because of Rick Shiel’s reviews on the Cobra drivers. I’ve been watching him for over a year now, and he has had a Cobra driver in his bag since I started following up. Looking at his comparisons with other driver’s, I figured that Cobra was the right mix of technology and price for my game.
It looks phenomenal behind the ball, and it feels great in my hands as well. I’ve hit probably 75 drives off the range and took it out last Saturday to play as well. I can tell it is much more consistent than my old driver (not pushing and slicing as much), however I have some swing faults I need to work through before really understanding it’s true potential.
New round
Last Saturday I played at Hunting Hawk, which was my first time on a course since a par 3 outing in early December.
I didn’t play well!
I ended up shooting +21 to par. I was +15 over 6 holes, and +6 on the other 12. The problem was definitely managing chaos.
One issue I had was not being able to find my golf ball. I had a few drives where I likely didn’t need to hit driver off the tee, but wanting to get a feel for the club on a course I hit it anyways. I hit it long into crap on two holes, and then did the same with a 3-wood on a third. I also had a horrific par 3 where I duffed the approach, duffed two chips, and then three putted.
It was a fun day regardless, just wish we could have hit a bit better.
Next steps
My main issue with driver is I come in too steep at the top of my golf swing. I’ve watched videos on this, tried to work on it at the range, but I’m at the point where I likely need to go to a swing coach and have them give me advice on how to shallow it out. I don’t notice the problem as much with my irons, but the longer length of the driver seems to really accentuate this problem.
I also have had my allowance appreciate quite a bit by investing it all in crypto currency over the last month. I’m thinking about cashing out and possibly adding another club to my bag, or making some improvements (new putter grip).
Should be a fun 2021! Looking forward to a lot of practice, some major swing improvements, and getting close to shooting 80!
