New Wedges
I bought some new wedges!
Cleveland CG One Wedge at Golf Galaxy
A while ago I got a 52 degree of this model (Cleveland CG One) and it has worked out pretty well. I typically use this wedge from 100 yards down to about 50 yards, as well as around the green when I need to carry more than 30 feet.
Old setup
My previous setup was the CG One at 52 degrees, and then an old Cleveland wedge that I really like at 58 degrees. If I wailed on the 58 degree I could get it to 70 yards, but realistically I could only hit it out to 50.
I also found myself in trouble around the green recently when I have a decent carry but the 52 degree felt like overkill. I’d have a lot of green to work with on a 20-40 foot chip and the 58 degree wouldn’t roll out like I would need it to.
I found myself with two hard gaps in my wedge game - approaching greens from 50-70 yards, and playing around the green from 20-40 feet with a roll-out.
New setup
With the 52 degree CG One in the bag, I bought two more CG ones at 56 and 60 degrees.
Why 60 degrees
I realized that I was using my 58 degree for all sorts of stuff. I’d deloft the club considerably for some bump and runs, but then open it way up to flop and stop it on a short sided pin. I got really confident with the club, which was a good and a bad thing; good because my wedge game around the green has improved significantly, but bad because I’m pushing the limits of my (old) equipment.
Going from a 58 to a 60 will focus my intent with the club. This wedge will help me flop it out of a tight lie and nail tucked pins when approaching greens from close. I’ve got two wedges now to handle the bump and runs (52 and 56).
Why 56 degrees
This wedge will be the in-between, taking care of business from 40-70 yards, and giving me a little more roll-out for those exposed pins. I’m also excited to use this club out of the sand as I have found myself unable to clear the bunker with the 58 degree lately. This club should push the ball a bit more which will help me scramble a bit better from those uncomfortable lies, whereas previously I was having to get way too creative with the 58 to make things happen.
52 degrees
Approach shots and long carries; the 52 degree will be primarily used as a gap wedge between my pitching wedge and the 56.
Practice
I’m getting all three wedges re-gripped at the moment with a midsized-pro grip. The 52 and 56 degree wedges will both be at the same length, and the 60 degree will be a half inch shorter to give me a little more control at address.
Once I get my clubs back I’m excited to take them to the range and see how they bite! I’m playing on Saturday so not a lot of time to break them in, but we’ll see if I feel good enough to throw them in the bag. If not I’ll leave them in the car and take the 58 out again.
