Round Planning - Crossings

Written by E. Chase Bleyl on 30 June 2020.

Going to be planning out my round at the Crossings for this Friday with my dad. Going to look at distances and which clubs I am likely to hit out of my bag to better focus my last practice session.

Holes, distances

The following table are all distances from the white tees (playing at 6229 yards) and how I would perfectly break up each hole if these distances were accurate.

Hole Par Total Distance Drive Approach Approach
1 4 362 250 [D] 112 [PW] -
2 5 536 250 [D] 200 [H] 86 [52]
3 4 318 200 [H] 118 [PW] -
4 4 320 230 [3W] 90 [52] -
5 4 346 250 [D] 94 [52] -
6 3 157 157 [7] - -
7 5 512 250 [D] 200 [H] 62 [58]
8 3 138 138 [9] - -
9 4 367 250 [D] 117 [PW] -
Hole Par Total Distance Drive Approach Approach
10 4 366 250 [D] 116 [PW] -
11 5 491 250 [D] 200 [H] 41 [58]
12 3 168 168 [6] - -
13 4 339 250 [D] 89 [52] -
14 4 381 230 [3W] 151 [7] -
15 5 521 250 [D] 200 [H] 71 [58]
16 4 353 250 [D] 103 [52] -
17 3 151 151 [7] - -
18 4 381 250 [D] 130 [9] -

The sum of shots by club based on this data are as follow:

Club Shots
Driver 11
3 Wood 2
Hybrid 5
4 Iron -
5 Iron -
6 Iron 1
7 Iron 3
8 Iron -
9 Iron 2
PW 4
52 degree 5
58 degree 3

Some interesting notes:

If I’m driving well I’ll never touch a long iron

My driving has been so inconsistent and my play so poor that I’m assuming we’ll be playing from the whites. The blues play at 6674 yards which is definitely too far for my current level of play. This course doesn’t have a good set of tees for me - I likely should be playing a hybrid of blues/whites.

When I’m driving well, I’ll consistently hit the ball 260, with a long ball going ~280 yards. If that happens I’ll be playing wedges all day, which means I really need to dial in my wedge game.

Guess my long iron practice from Saturday and today won’t be necessary this week.

Wedges, wedges, wedges

According to these numbers I’ll have 12 approach shots with my wedges, 14 if I include my 9 iron. That means if I’m driving the ball well I have a legitimate shot at getting on the green in regulation.

What I’m particularly weary of are the 8 shots between my 52 degree and 58 degree wedges. I definitely need to get back to the range and hit a couple rounds of balls off grass with those two clubs. If I can dial those in, I think Friday will be a pretty good scoring day.

Reel the driver in

Because of the shorter course I don’t have to bomb it on any hole. I do need to put it in play. My consistency has been pretty poor with my driver and that is part of the reason I’ve spent so much time working on it. If I can hit it straight and 250 I think Friday will be a really solid day.

Keys to success

Driver and wedges. If those two things are going for me I have a great shot at breaking 90. I’ve heard pretty bad things about this course’s conditioning so I’m guessing I’ll have to expect a pretty poor performance around the green. Thus, getting on in regulation wll be all the more important as three putts will likely be more common than at another course.

Luckily three-putting is okay when I’m shooting for bogey golf and am on the green in regulation. Just need to be consistent off the tee to set myself up for efficient turn arounds. A good driver and good wedges will lock up my best score of the year.
